Cuestas develop in mountainous areas with monoclinic structures. A monocline is a damaged limb of an anticline or syncline. A cuesta is characterised by mountain features oriented along the trend of the strata and has two asymmetrical slopes; one is steep and short, and the other is gentle and long. The steep face is the front slope, and the bedding is nearly vertical. The back slope is a gentle slope, and it runs parallel to and conforms to the regional dip (Fig. 60).
