Copper Coast Global Geopark, Ireland

The Copper Coast Geopark became a global geopark in 2004. It is located on the southeastern coast of Ireland. Extensive black shale and evidence of two volcanic eruptions can be found in the area. The ancient volcanoes were later covered by marine sediments and organic debris, which include the very rich fossil-bearing limestone. Annestown, a pretty village with a nice beach, also has one of the largest sea arches in Ireland. The rugged coastline, which includes a string of small coves, caves and harbours, as well as the forests, rivers, bogs and lakes make the area an attractive tourist destination. Other attractions, including tombs and monuments dating back as far as 5,000 years as well as medieval mines, kilns, castles and churches, can be found along the beach and in the old villages in the area.
