This park is located approximately 550 km from Costa Rica in the Pacific, and it protects a core area of 1,997 km2. As the habitat of the only tropical forest in the tropical waters of the eastern Pacific, it also bears the brunt of the Equatorial Counter Current of the Northern Hemisphere. The multiple interactions between the islands and the surrounding marine ecosystems have made it the best natural laboratory for research on ecological processes. The underwater world of the national park has become famous and attracts large numbers of divers. It is one of the best destinations for viewing large ocean animals, such as sharks, rays, tuna and dolphins.
