The coastal zone is the region in which oceans and lands interact, or it is the transition zone from the ocean to the land. It consists of the land above the average high tide line, the intertidal zone and the underwater slope below the average low tide line. The modern coastal zone includes the upper limit of the present seawater on the coast and the adjacent land, and the subtidal slope profile area subject to erosion and deposition caused by seawater action. Coastal ecosystems are characterised by their complex, marginal and active nature.
