Yellowstone National Park, which is located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho in the northwestern U.S., covers a core protection area of 8,983.49 km2 with 96%, 3% and 1% in each of the three states, respectively. In addition to covering a vast area of natural forests, it also contains more than half of the world’s known geothermal resources with more than 10,000 geothermal sites. It also has the world’s largest concentration of geysers (more than 300, or 2/3 of those on Earth). Established in 1872, Yellowstone is also known for its wildlife preservation, such as grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk.
