A wetland is a unique ecosystem of interacting water and land areas, including all natural and artificial seasonal and perennial water areas, swamps, peatlands, wet meadows, lakes, rivers, floodplains, estuaries, deltas, tidal flats, coral reefs, mangroves, reservoirs, ponds, paddy fields and other coastal zones with water depths less than 6 m at low tide. Wetlands account for 6% of the global surface area and play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance, maintaining biodiversity and rare species, conserving water resources, storing flood water, preventing droughts, regulating climate, and supplementing groundwater.
