Fossils of this biota are mainly distributed in phosphorite rocks in the late Neo-Proterozoic Duoshantuo Formation in the Weng An area, Guizhou Province. The fossils include multicellular algae with a 3-D cell structure and embryos of early animals. The embryo fossils of early animals are made up of cells at the stage of cell division, which is characteristic of early cleavage. This may also represent bilaterally symmetrical invertebrates. The Weng’an biota have provided substantial fossil evidence for studying the early evolution of multicellular organisms.
