Weishan Lake is also known as Nansi (South Four) Lake and is composed of four interconnected lakes: Weishan Lake, Zhaoyang Lake, Nanyang Lake and Dushan Lake. It is located on the boundary between Shandong and Jiangsu Provinces. This lake system is 120 km long and has a maximum east-west width of 25 km. The lake surface covers 1,266 km2, which makes it the largest freshwater lake in northern China. The lake contains scenic locations, such as Weishan Island and the old Nanyang town. Weishan Island is the largest island in Weishan Lake and has an area of approximately 9 km2. The island has the tombs for three sages, Weizi, Muyi and Zhangliang, which are important cultural relics. During the anti-Japanese war, Weishan Lake was a base for the revolutionary armed forces Weishan troop, the canal brigade and the railway guerrillas’ troop, who had many heroic achievements and left behind many stories, including the popular song ‘Playing My Beloved Crude Pipa’ (Fig. 9).
