Wanshan Mercury National Mining Park, Guizhou

This park is located in eastern Guizhou Province. Wanshan Mercury National Mining Park was the largest natural cinnabar producing area in the world. Today, it is the largest mineral production base in China and contains the remains of a world-renowned mercury mine. It became a national mining park in 2005. Wanshan is known as ‘China’s mercury capital’ because it has a profound history of exploitation and because its abundant mining cultural landscapes have been preserved. The mine parks are rich in mining relics and have different landscape types. The main features include the 970-km-long underground tunnel, the goaf that covers 3.75 km² and groups of ancient caves on steep cliffs.
