This protected area is located in southern Jordan, near the border with Saudi Arabia, and it covers an area of 740 km2. It was added to the World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site. Its varied landscape of desert features includes a series of gorges, natural arches, cliffs, slopes, large areas of sandstone remnants and caves. Rock paintings, stone carvings, and archaeological remains illustrate the history of human-environment interaction over the past 12,000 years. Approximately 25,000 petroglyphs and 20,000 pieces of stone art trace the development of human thought and the early development of the alphabet. The heritage site shows the historical evolution of pastoralism, agriculture and urban activities in the region.
