This geopark is located in the Extremadura region of Spain and covers an area of 2,544 km2. It became a global geopark in 2011. The unique geomorphological features of the park are influenced by the structural geology. The folds and faults formed due to strong tectonic processes. The rocks, which include the oldest rocks in Europe, are from a wide range of geological periods, including the Sinian, Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian (650 million to 400 million years ago). The geopark also has rich biodiversity with bird protection and biodiversity corridors and monumental trees. There is also early evidence of a mining culture and ornamental stones and boulders that can be dated back to the Bronze Age and Iron Age.
