Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, Indonesia

This site is located on the coast of the Strait of Malacca on the eastern and western sides of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island and has a core protection area of 25,951 km². The rainforest area consists of three national parks: Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan Selatan. The heritage sites have great potential benefits for the long-term protection of the unique and diverse habitats of Sumatra Island. The reserve hosts approximately 10,000 types of plants, including 17 native species, more than 200 species of mammals, and 580 species of birds, including 465 species of resident birds and 21 species of native birds. The reserve contains 22 species of mammals that are unique to Asia, 15 of which are endemic to Indonesia, including Sumatra.
