Sunshine can be an important tourism resource. Coastal countries in the Mediterranean have subtropical climates with long periods of sun. Large numbers of beach resorts have been built for tourists and have turned the region into a world-renowned tourist destination. The daylight at the poles is also another type of tourist attraction in high-latitude regions. Due to the rotation and revolution of the Earth, the Arctic region experiences daylight for the entire day around the peak of summer. This phenomenon has been called ‘white night’ or ‘polar night’. Countries in far northern Europe enjoy warm and humid maritime climates with more than seventy days of ‘white night’. They have become excellent destinations for tourists who want to avoid the hot summer and experience the polar night.
