This national park is located in Petén Province in northern Guatemala. It has an area of 576 km2 and is covered by lush jungles. The park has important remains left behind by the Mayans that lived here from the sixth century to the tenth century AD. Religious ceremonial centres include dungeon temples and palaces as well as public squares connected by slopes. The ruins of residential areas are scattered throughout the surrounding countryside.
