Carl Ritter (1779–1859) was a German geographer. He graduated from the University of Halley. He and Humboldt are considered the founders of modern geography. He introduced the term geography, emphasising the comprehensiveness and unity of man and earth. His masterpiece was ‘Earth Science in Relation to Nature and the History of Man (19 volumes)’. His other works included ‘European Geography’, ‘General Theory of Geology’, and ‘Comparative Geography’.
