Stegodon huanghoensis is a species of Proboscida. Its name was chosen because this set of fossils was found in the Huanghe (Yellow River) district. It was 4 m tall and 8 m long with 3-m-long tusks, which are like a pair of swords. Therefore, it is also called the ‘sword-tusk elephant’. This set of Stegodon fossils is currently the most complete set in the world. This fossil is an important palaeontological finding for studies of the palaeo-geography and ancient climate in the Gansu area (Fig. 41).
