The Srebarna Nature Reserve is located in the borderland of northeastern Bulgaria near Romania and adjacent to the Danube, and it has a core protection area of 6.3 km2. The word ‘Srebarna’ means ‘silver lake’. It is a freshwater reserve along the Danube and is the breeding ground of nearly 100 species of birds, many of which are rare or endangered. Approximately 80 other bird species migrate and seek refuge there every winter. Among the most interesting bird species are the Dalmatian pelican, great egret, night heron, purple heron, glossy ibis and white spoonbill.
