The Southern Mountain Hengshan is one of the Wuyue (Five Peaks) of China. It is located in western Hengshan County on the western side of the Xiang River, Hunan Province. It is a fault-block mountain composed of Yanshanian granite. The main peak, Zhurong (Fire God) Peak, has an elevation of 1,300.2 m in. The mountain is towering and spectacular. Hengshan has a long cultural history. Local people believe that in ancient times, King Shun had visited the area during his travel to the southern part of the country. They also believe that King Yu had also visited during his flood control operation. This mountain was also a place of worship by emperors of various dynasties and has been a holy site of Buddhism. More than 200 temples were built here, including the important relics of the Nanyue (South Peak) Temple, Zhusheng Monastery, Buddhist Scriptures Hall, Fangguang Temple, Nantian (Southern Heaven) Gate and the Banshan Pavilion.
