The South American Plate includes the western part of South America and the South Atlantic. Its eastern boundary is the Mid-Atlantic Ridges, and the deep Chilean Trench, which is near to the coast of South America, is located to the west. This plate moves west, and the deep Chile-Peru Trench and the towering Andean Mountain ranges formed due to the subduction of the Nazca Plate to the west.
