Surface water can cause dissolution of soluble rocks, creating small grooves and pits that are known as solution marks. These marks are generally wide and deep; they are a few centimetres to more than 10 cm wide and deep and can be a few centimetres to several metres long. Solution marks are common, particularly in areas with annual precipitation greater than 700 mm. They can be divided into angular, patched, honeycomb, fish-scale and window shade shapes (Fig. 36).
