Groundwater brings dissolved minerals to the surface, which settle to form a ‘sinter’ landscape. Common sinters include sulphur sinters, siliceous sinters, calcareous sinters, salt sinters and metal sinters, and calcareous sinters or travertine are most common. Sinters have unique and distinct forms and many colours, and their tourism value is high. Examples are the travertine stream in Huanglong and the travertine pool in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province, and the Baishuitai (White Water Platform) composed of sediments in a carbonic spring in Zhongdian, Yunnan Province. They are rare natural features in China.
