Sinosauropteryx is a genus of the theropod Compsognathus. It was found in the tuffaceous siltstone layer of the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation in Sihetun, Beipiao, Chaoyang City. Chinese and international palaeontologists consider Sinosauropteryx to be the first feathered theropod dinosaur found and it was a transitional species between dinosaurs and birds. This important discovery provided crucial evidence for the hypothesis that birds originated from small theropod dinosaurs (Fig. 32).
