Siguang Li (1889–1971), nicknamed Zhongkui, was a native of Huanggang City, Hubei Province. He was a geologist and a founder of geomechanics as well as one of the founders of China’s geology. He was a professor and director of the Department of Geology at Peking University. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as minister of geology and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, chairman of the China Association for Science and Technology, and vice president of the World Association of Scientists. He devoted his life to research on palaeontology, glaciology, geomechanics and energy minerals. He made significant contributions to the development of China’s energy industry. His major works include ‘The Geology of China’, ‘Shovel Branch of Northern China’, ‘Mount Lu in the Ice Age’, ‘Introduction to Geomechanics’, and ‘Seismology and Geology’.
