Synonym: Calcareous soil
A sierozem is a weak leaching soil that forms in the warm temperate zone in arid steppe vegetation. It develops on the parent material of loess and is formed by weak humus accumulation and strong gypsum and soluble salt deposition. The soil is greyish brown, yellowish brown and brown. The profile contains a small amount of gypsum, and the entire section has a strong lime reaction. It is a zonal soil type in desert grassland areas and is between black loess and grey desert soil.
