This book is a famous ancient Chinese geography book written by Daoyuan Li (472–527 AD) during the Northern Wei Dynasty. It includes 40 volumes. Based on the outline of ‘Shui Jing Zhu’ (Commentary on the Water Classic), Li greatly elaborated and supplemented the content into a book with 20 times more material than the original. ‘Shui Jing’ (Water Classics) is a work from the Three Kingdoms Period (approximately 220–280 AD). The original author is unknown, and the full text is very simple; it includes only approximately 10,000 words about the origins, flows and destinations of approximately 130 rivers. ‘Shui Jing Zhu’ (Commentary on the Water Classic) documented 1,252 rivers of various sizes, fully recording the landforms, hydrology, vegetation, water conservancy, economic development, cities, historic sites, rocks and minerals, legends, and customs and citing 437 references.
