This site is located in the northeastern corner of Hokkaido. The protected area includes the area from the centre of the peninsula to Haishu and the surrounding waters. The region is an outstanding example of the interaction between marine and terrestrial ecology. It has been greatly affected by seasonal low-latitude sea ice, and it has extraordinary ecosystem productivity.
