The Shanwang biota is found in diatomite of the Early Miocene Shanwang Formation in the Jiejia River Basin, eastern Linqu County, Shandong Province. These strata contain many kinds of elegant animal and plant fossils; hence, this site has long been known as a ‘Museum of Ancient Fossils’. The main fossils include diatoms, pollens, large plant fossils, ostracods, insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The signature fossils are Rana basaltica, Bufo linquensis, Procynops miocenicus, Mionatrix, Alligator luicus, Shandongornis shawanensis, Shanwang bats (Chiroptera), Diatomys shantungensis, Hemicyon hareni, Palaeomeryx tricornis, Lagomeryx and Rhinocerotidae. The Shanwang biota provides evidence for studying the evolution of biota and environmental changes in eastern China since the Cenozoic (Fig. 22).
