The melting of glaciers and the thermal expansion of the upper seawater are reasons for the rise in sea level. Sea level rise can also be caused by other natural factors, such as vertical crustal movements. The sum of global sea level rise and the vertical movement of the earth’s crust accounts for the total change in sea level in an area. The changes are relative. Rising sea level can inundate low-lying coastal areas and erode the coast. It can also increase the intensity and frequency of storm surges, which endanger the life and property of people living in coastal areas and will cause salination of the land.
