Synonym: Dust storm
Sandstorms are also known as dust storms. Strong winds blow large amounts of dust and dirt into the air, making the air particularly hazy and causing horizontal visibilities of less than 1 km. Sandstorms can be classified according to the horizontal visibility. Strong sandstorms have a horizontal visibility of <500 m, and weak sandstorms have horizontal visibilities of 500–1,000 m. Dust storms mainly occur in the late spring and early summer, causing traffic delays and problems with farming and other human activities. Sandstorms are the main supplier of loess materials in China.
