This heritage site is located in the southwestern Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, and it covers the core of the Reunion National Park. It has an area of more than 1,000 km2, which is approximately 40% of the total area of the island. Reunion Island is composed of two volcanic mountains. The heritage area contains two towering volcanic peaks, tall cliffs, and three cliff-edge cirques that overlook the island. The lower cliffs and forests cover gorges and basins that altogether form magnificent scenery. The area is a natural habitat for plants, which are diverse but include endemic local species. The subtropical rainforest, cloud forest, and woods intertwine to form a colourful and attractive outdoor mosaic of ecological systems and characteristic landscapes.
