Pyroxene is the general name for the pyroxene family of minerals, which can be categorized into two sub-families: orthopyroxene and monoclinic pyroxene (clinopyroxene). These sub-families can be further subdivided into numerous species, such as enstatite, bronzite, hypersthenite, diopside, calcisite, augite, acmite augite and spodumenite. The crystals are usually equant, dark (ranging from green, brown, and tan to black), and have a vitreous lustre, a Mohs hardness of 5–7 and a specific gravity of 3.1–3.5. Pyroxene is an important rock-forming mineral that is mainly found in igneous rocks.
