Synonym: Headland landscape
This is a landscape consisting of a pointed land mass protruding into the ocean or a lake. This landscape is often found in front of a peninsula, such as Cape Chengshan in Shandong Province, China, and the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa. The formation of a headland is mainly caused by differential marine erosion of the coast, during which softer rock is eroded and recedes rapidly to form a bay or harbour. The more resistant rock recedes at a slower rate and eventually forms a projected headland separating two bays (Fig. 29).
