Plitvice Lakes National Park is located in the border area approximately 10 km from Bihać in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in central Croatia. After an extension of the original heritage site, the site now covers a core protection area of 192 km2. The flow of the upper reaches of the Korana River over the limestone and chalk for thousands of years has deposited travertine barriers, creating natural dams that in turn have created a series of beautiful lakes, caves and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today. The forests in the park are home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species.
