This geopark is located in eastern Pingshun County, Changzhi City, Shanxi Province. It is situated in the central part of the main ridge of Mount Taihangshan. It covers an area of 174 km2, and its main geological features cover an area of 59 km2. It was designated as a national geopark by the Ministry of Land and Resources in December 2011. The main scenic districts from north to south comprise Tongtian Gorge, Tianji Mountain and Shenlong Bay. The main attractions of the geopark are the geomorphology, water landscapes, ecology and culture. It is a large, comprehensive geopark that integrates scientific research and tourism. The geopark has experienced a long and complicated geological history, and it records sedimentation dating back to 1.15 billion years ago that includes several major marine transgression-regression cycles.
