Phonolite is an alkaline volcanic rock that gets its name because it generates a loud sound when tapped. It is composed of alkali feldspar, feldspathoids (such as nepheline, leucite, analcite, hauynite and noselite) and dark minerals. It is called nosean phonolite when it contains noselite and is called leucophonolite when it contains leucite. These two types of rocks exist in Jiangning Tongjing (Copper Well) in Nanjing, and nosean phonolite can also be found in Bamaoqiongzong in Tibet.
