This geopark is located in the Slavonia region of eastern Croatia and covers an area of 336 km2. In 2007, it was selected as a member of the Global Geopark Network. Fossils are common in the Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. The structural uplift and continued denudation of the Slavonian mountain range provided the materials for sedimentation. These sediments were eventually deposited in the valleys of the Sava and Drava rivers and reached a thickness greater than 1,000 m. The complex geologic effects of Papuk resulted in the formation of a hydrogeological system that includes several streams in canyons. The northern part of Rupnica has been protected as the first geological monument in Croatia because the columnar joints in the albite rhyolite form square and hexagonal rock pillars.
