The Palaeolithic Age was the first stage of the Stone Age. This age was an important stage of human development; it was the stage of Homo erectus and the early stage of archaic Homo sapiens and late Homo sapiens. The Palaeolithic Age is the equivalent of the entire Pleistocene. The early Palaeolithic is equivalent to the early to middle stages of the Pleistocene, approximately 200,000 to 3 million years ago. The Middle Palaeolithic is equivalent to the early and middle stages of the Late Pleistocene, approximately 30,000–200,000 years ago. The Late Palaeolithic is equivalent to the late stage of the Late Pleistocene, approximately 10,000–30,000 years ago. Because human evolution varied between different regions of the world, the dates of the Palaeolithic Age in different locations are not completely consistent.
