This is a landscape consisting of an oxbow-like lake, which is also called a mort lake. In flat plains, rivers tend to meander freely. When the river flow cuts through the neck of a meander to form a new river channel, the abandoned section is blocked by sand and mud as the flow rate and flow volume decrease. This section can become a lake shaped like an oxbow when it is filled with water. It is therefore called an oxbow lake. Typical examples are the lakes along the banks of the Jingjiang section of the lower Yangtze River. These lakes are locally called ‘Moon Lakes’. Academics have proposed that all abandoned river courses that become lakes be called oxbow lakes (Fig. 8).
