These islands are located in the ocean south of the South Island and are composed of five archipelagos, namely, Snares Islands/Tini Heke, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands and Campbell Island, that cover a core protection area of 764 km2. The islands, which are between Antarctica and the subtropics, have high natural productivity, biodiversity and density of wild animals. In addition, the birds, vegetation and invertebrates have endemic characteristics and large populations. A large variety of oceanic seabirds and penguins build their nests here. The islands host a total of 126 bird species, including 40 seabirds, of which only five reproduce in the area.
