A national water resource scenic area is a specific water body, shore area or water resources project with aesthetic value, excellent environmental conditions and a certain scale. It is established to provide appreciation, entertainment, leisure, vacation or scientific and cultural education activities. In China, national water resources scenic areas are approved and reviewed by the Ministry of Water Resources. By 2010, China had 314 national water scenic areas of different types, including reservoirs, wetlands, natural lakes, urban lakes, irrigation districts, soil and water conservation areas, and ancient water conservation projects. Water resource scenic areas are one of the research and service focuses of tourism earth science.
