Venezuela established its first national park, Henri Pieter National Park, in 1937. The Canaima National Park, which covers an area of more than 30,000 km2, is the country’s largest and is the sixth largest national park in the world. In 1994, it was added to the World Heritage List. Due to Venezuela’s location in the tropics and its rich resources, in addition to the government’s emphasis on protection, there are currently 43 national parks, of which 13 are located in the western region, seven are in the Andean Mountains, three are in the plains, six are in the Central District, five are in the Eastern District, six are in the area of Guyana, and three are island and coastal national parks.
