The government of Israel promulgated Decree No. 5723 in 1963, which announced the establishment of the National Park Service and the National Nature Protection Agency. Because the designation of national parks has political implications, this process is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister’s Office and guidance of the Minister of the Interior. National laws stipulate that the ‘primary purpose of national parks and nature reserves is to satisfy tourists’ enjoyment’. In 1998, the National Nature Protection Bureau were established by the National Assembly and the National Wildlife Conservation Bureau. As of July 2007, Israel had 41 national parks and 14 national nature reserves.
