The Ministry of Land and Resources published the ‘National Geopark Planning Compilation of Technical Requirements’. One of the provisions requires every geopark to publish a geopark science guidebook for the public. Therefore, each national geopark in China has a standardised book with an assigned serial number and similar format and design. As of March 2012, there were 221 serial numbers and 32 volumes (in provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions). Nine had been published, and the others were in the process of editing and printing. Because the books target the general public, they are written in simple, understandable language with many illustrations, pictures and diagrams. The geology and landscape of each park and their formation and evolution are introduced. These books provide tourists a convenient means of reference and are excellent self-guided tour books.
