This cross-border world heritage site is composed of Białowieża Forest Park in Podlaskie Voivodeship in northeastern Poland and the contiguous natural reserves of Białowieża Forest in Grodno, southwestern Belarus. It is located in the mountainous watershed area of the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. It became a cross-border natural heritage site in 1992 due to Belarus’s extension of a former heritage site (Białowieża National Park of Poland). The forest reserves have a vast area of evergreen broadleaf forest and are inhabited by a variety of endemic wild animals. The heritage site, which is located along the border between the two counties, was also a historical hunting and summer resort for the Polish and Russian royal families.
