In Chinese, the term marine transgression is sometimes called marine advancement. It is a geologic event over a relatively short time during which sea level rises or the land sinks, resulting in flooding of the continent. A marine transgressive plane is a transgressive unconformity. On this plane, the marine sedimentary strata often exhibit the characteristics of an overcomplex unconformity.
