This geopark is located in the coastal zone approximately 50 km east of Linhai City in eastern Zhejiang Province and was approved as a national geopark in 2002. It is characterised by a geomorphic landscape composed of intrusive and extrusive volcanic rocks dating from approximately 95 million to 65 million years ago. The main strata in the park are the Upper Cretaceous Tiantai Group, which is part of the Late Mesozoic volcanic belt along the eastern coast of Zhejiang. The volcanic activity was dominated by eruptions of acidic magma accompanied by magmatic intrusions. The park is composed of layered volcanic rocks, faulted structures and vertical columnar joints that form a unique landscape of lava tables and peaks.
