Synonym: Field yellow stone
Field yellow stone is also called ‘Tian Huang’ or ‘Tian Shi’. It is a fine variety of Shoushan stone. High-quality Tian Huang is extremely valuable, and there is a saying that a tale of Tian Huang equals three tales of gold. It is mainly composed of minerals of the kaolinite family, such as dickite and kaolinite, and several other minerals, such as quartz, pyrite and stibnite. Tian Huang stone is mainly found beneath the paddy fields around Shoushan Creek in Fuzhou; the higher quality stones come from the middle field because they have a yellowish colour like loquat, so they were given the name ‘Tian Huang (field yellow)’.
