Introduction
Significant discussions in the twenty-first century about education revolve around the need for education that promotes and develops global citizenship. While there are different interpretations of what constitutes global citizenship, it is often seen to focus on how people act in the world and how they understand themselves in relation to others in the world. Global citizens are socially responsible and engaged with the world beyond their immediate local context. They understand the relationship between local events and their global consequences and are concerned about the world’s environment. In response to the increasing cultural diversity in many societies in the world, global citizens understand and appreciate cultural differences, and they are effective intercultural communicators.
