Abstract
The legal profession is, unfortunately, rife with workplace bullying, and this is so for numerous reasons. Whether one focuses on the incentives and deterrents created by the billing and assigning systems at law firms, the personalities attracted to and mainstays of legal education itself or the hierarchical structure of law firms and other legal workplaces, the pockets of opportunity for bullying behaviour to go unchecked, or even be sanctioned, are rampant. When one factors in the pressures of legal work and the under-representation of women and minorities in the profession, especially at the highest echelons of power, prestige and compensation, the picture is drawn into even sharper focus. This chapter probes into the root causes of, factors in and suggested solutions to this pervasive and pernicious problem. Through its contents, the chapter highlights areas for further research as bullying in the legal profession lacks systematic empirical investigation thus far.
