Definition
Sāyaṇa or Sāyaṇācārya (1315–1387 CE) is popularly known as the commentator of Vedas. He was prime minister of Vijaynagar Empire in the patronage of Sangama kings.
Introduction
Sāyaṇa was born in Hampi located in Karnataka. His father was Māyaṇa and mother was Śrīmatī. His elder brother was Mādhava and younger brother was Bhoganātha. They had a sister named Singala. He belonged to the Taittirīya śākhā of Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda and Bhāradvāja gotra. There were three preceptors of Sāyaṇa namely Vidyātīrtha (pontiff of Śṛṅgeri maṭha), Bhāratī Kṛṣṇatīrtha (pontiff of Śṛṅgeri maṭha), and Śrīkaṇṭhanātha from Kāñcī.
Sāyaṇa flourished under the patronage of four kings of Sangama dynasty. Sāyaṇa was the minister of Kampa, Sangama II, Bukka and Harihara II.
